Joseph P. Newhouse, Ph.D.
Joseph P. Newhouse, Ph.D., is Harvard University's John D. MacArthur Professor of Health Policy and Management and heads the Interfaculty Initiative on Health Policy. He also directs the Division of Health Policy Research and Education, which administers Harvard’s Ph.D. program in Health Policy. Newhouse spent the first 20 years of his career at RAND, including four years as head of its Economics Department.
Newhouse was the founding editor of the Journal of Health Economics, which he continues to edit. He has served as a commissioner of the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission. He is a member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
He was the first recipient of the David Kershaw Prize of the Association of Public Policy Analysis and Management for outstanding contribution by someone under 40 and has received the Distinguished Investigator Award of the Association for Health Services Research.
Newhouse received B.A. and Ph.D. degrees in Economics from Harvard University.
