Ann Lion joined Abt Associates in 2008 as the project director for the Health Systems 20/20 project. HS 20/20 is the USAID Bureau of Global Health's principal project for health system strengthening.

Lion came to Abt Associates from the U.S. Government's Office of the Global AIDS Coordinator (OGAC), where she focused on the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. As Global Fund Technical Support Coordinator, she was responsible for the design, implementation, and evaluation of U.S. government technical support to Global Fund grants having difficulty implementing their interventions.

Lion has 30 years of experience as a leader and manager of global, regional, and country-level health programs. Prior to OGAC, she worked for USAID's Office of Population and Reproductive Health as Senior Health Advisor for Human Resources for Health. She managed the agency's bureau-wide capacity project; oversaw a $250 million portfolio focusing on the strengthening and integration of health systems at a global level; and directed project staffing, strategic planning, and linkages with other global efforts. She also managed USAID's Youthnet project.

Earlier as senior management advisor at the Program for Appropriate Technology in Health (PATH), she was regional director for Latin America and the Caribbean for a USAID global project to improve the performance of health care providers.

Lion has an M.S.PH. from the University of Illinois Medical School at Chicago and completed her Dr.PH. from the George Washington University School of Public Health.
