Nancy Pielemeier, DrPH Nancy Pielemeier, DrPH

Nancy R. Pielemeier, vice president of the international Health Policy and Systems Division at Abt Associates, manages and provides technical leadership of a large portfolio of international health projects focusing on health policy and systems strengthening. She manages a staff of approximately 600 based in more than 30 countries and the US and is a member of the Management Advisory Group. Pielemeier has had over 30 years of professional experience in international public health policy and program development, about half of which involved practical implementation while resident in Botswana, Brazil, Liberia, and Malaysia.

Pielemeier served as director of Partners for Health Reformplus (PHRplus), the flagship project in health policy and systems strengthening of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). Leading this $98 million project (and its predecessor program, PHR), she oversaw a staff of more than 150 in the United States and over 30 other countries that addressed appropriate reform of health policy, financing, service delivery, and information systems. In designing and executing these projects, she introduced innovative approaches to partnership development, organizational change, stakeholder participation, and communication of lessons learned.

Prior to working on the PHR projects, Pielemeier was director of the USAID-funded ZdravReform Project, an Abt Associates program of technical assistance for health finance and service delivery reform in the former Soviet Union.

She came to Abt Associates in 1994, having been an independent consultant in Brasilia, Brazil; executive manager and senior policy advisor for USAID in Washington, D.C.; public health officer for USAID in Monrovia, Liberia; coordinator of a health services development project in Gaborone, Botswana; and a Peace Corps teacher in Malaysia; among other international assignments.

Pielemeier holds a BA in Modern Languages from Knox College and a DrPH in International Health and an MHS in Comprehensive Health Planning from The Johns Hopkins University School of Hygiene and Public Health.
