Abt Associates: Bold thinkers driving real-world impact
Nancy Nachbar, principal associate in Abt Associates’ International Health Division, has been elected as an alternate member to the board of the Roll Back Malaria Partnership, the global framework to implement coordinated action against malaria.
“It is an honor to serve on this board,” Nachbar said. “The Roll Back Malaria Partnership is very important for ensuring that recent gains in malaria control are sustained and that future goals are met.”
The Roll Back Malaria (RBM) Partnership, which has 21 voting board members, represents more than 500 members organized into eight constituencies: malaria endemic countries, bilateral and multilateral development partners, the private sector, non-governmental and community-based organizations, foundations, research and academic institutions, OECD donor countries, and ex-officio members.
RBM Partnership members coordinate their malaria-control efforts to ensure resources are used effectively. The Partnership’s efforts yielded significant results in the last decade. Global malaria deaths have decreased by an estimated 38% during that period, saving 1 million lives. Forty-three countries – including 11 in Africa – reduced malaria cases or deaths by 50% or more.
Abt Associates is playing a leading role in malaria reduction efforts in Africa, including in case management, malaria in pregnancy, health systems research, and indoor residual spraying. Abt is USAID’s leading implementer of indoor residual spraying programs in 14 African countries through the Africa Indoor Residual Spraying (AIRS) Project, USAID’s flagship anti-malarial spraying program. Abt also is carrying out indoor residual spraying programs in Zambia and Uganda.
Nachbar, who has been involved with the RBM Partnership for nearly a decade, said her goal for her two-year term is to represent the perspective of program implementers as part of the private sector’s elected delegation. Nachbar will work closely with her delegation and its three additional board representatives, attend the biannual RBM Partnership meetings and engage with the Partnership’s working groups, committees, and task forces.
