Abt Associates: Bold thinkers driving real-world impact
Monday March 5 marked the inauguration of the Obstetrics and Neonatal Departments and the Mother and Child Clinics in Mafraq Hospital located in Mafraq City, Jordan. Renovations to make this a state-of-the art hospital are part of the USAID-funded Abt Health Systems Strengthening II (HSSII) project. The newly renovated delivery ward, obstetrics and neonatal departments, as well as the postpartum clinic, are now equipped with top-of-the-line medical equipment and furniture, and the project, which lasted eight months, will directly impact the mortality rates of mothers and their newborns in this area.
Training and health promotion rooms to be used to train hospital staff and educate area families about maternal and child health were also created for the 108-bed hospital. Mafraq has a 78 per cent occupancy rate, serves a population of approximately 287,000 inhabitants and the annual total number of admissions is 9,462. The story of the renovation is told through the brief video below.
The Minister of Health expressed his appreciation of the work done in all of the renovated hospitals and said that nobody can find such state-of-the-art departments anywhere in the Kingdom and even the Arab world. The HSSII project will continue working with the Ministry of Health to complete emergency, obstetric and neonatal department renovations in another 17 hospitals by the end of 2014.
