Abt Associates: Bold thinkers driving real-world impact
In Rwanda, approximately 610,000 children are orphans, according to UNICEF. Causes include illnesses, such as AIDS, and the 1994 genocide, which left about 95,000 children without parents. These children are forced to grow up quickly.
One of them is Rachel, whose father died of a stomach ulcer and whose mother died of AIDS. At the age of 11 she worried about putting food on the table for her younger brother and sister while her classmates studied for exams and played with friends.
Donations of cardboard from an Abt Associates-led malaria control project will help orphans in Rwanda establish reliable sources of income.
