Abt Associates: Bold thinkers driving real-world impact
It’s not every day that the vice president and the former president of the Dominican Republic hear an Abt Associates project director give a progress report on Abt’s maternal health work in a country.
In the Dominican Republic, an Abt Associates-led project helped lower maternal deaths in 10 intervention hospitals by 49% between 2009 and 2012, contributing to an unprecedented nationwide reduction of maternal deaths.
But on July 30 in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, they attended a lecture – “Maternal & Child Centers of Excellence Model as a Strategy to Reduce Maternal Mortality” – delivered by Rosa-Maria Suarez, chief of party of the Maternal & Child Centers of Excellence Project, implemented by Abt Associates and funded by USAID.
Suarez provided a detailed explanation of the context, the approach, and the results achieved through the Centers of Excellence Model. The project is working with 10 public sectfor hospitals nationwide to reduce maternal and infant mortality by instituting stronger health management and quality improvement systems. The five-year project began in 2009.
