Abt Associates: Bold thinkers driving real-world impact
In her review of Fighting for Reliable Evidence in the March 31 issue of Clinical Trials, Janet Turks Wittes, Ph.D., writes that the authors, Judith M. Gueron and Howard Rolston, “have done a great service to their own field by so clearly describing the history of randomized experiments in social welfare. They will have done a service to ours (as well) if we clinical trialists read their book.”
Wittes, a prominent statistician and an associate editor of Clinical Trials, encourages her peers in medical research to do more to fend off those who would rely on weaker methods.
“All in clinical trials should [read this book], so that we can crawl out of our silo and learn what others have done...The book reminds us trialists to think more clearly about how to summarize our data…Unless we trialists are prepared to assume intellectual leadership, the drive of many to use nonrandomized studies to assess [comparative effectiveness] can lead to incorrect conclusions with profound consequences for medical treatment.”
Rolston is a principal associate at Abt Associates and Gueron is past president of MDRC.
The book is available through its publisher, Russell Sage.
