Abt Associates: Bold thinkers driving real-world impact
The Abt-led AfyaInfo project, which supports the Government of Kenya’s move toward a single, unified and integrated National Health Information System, recently celebrated the successful completion of the initial phase of building a County Health Information Network (CHIN) in Uasin Gishu County. Uasin Gishu has led the way for counties to invest in meaningful use of Infrastructure and Communication Technology (ICT) for health.
The introduction of this state-of-the-art CHIN and ICT infrastructure improves the county’s capability to collect, manage and use data as well as enhances their ability to implement a system of electronic medical records, telemedicine, e-referral, and e-learning. Improved health information systems through meaningful application of ICT should result in patients receiving better-quality of health services for HIV care and treatment as well as improved maternal, newborn and child health services.
“Better information and better access to this information gives health care providers and managers powerful tools,” said County Governor Jackson Mandago. He added, “Automated patient medical records improve upon paper medical records through better organization, presentation and accessibility of data. Hospitals now using automated portions of patient medical records have reported both increased staff productivity and potential reductions in operating costs.”
Uasin Gishu County now has four high-volume health facilities linked to the county departments of health management offices. AfyaInfo support the counties to build on this success with the goal of equipping a total of 144 high-volume health facilities in 18 counties around the country by the end of the project in 2016.
“Through this partnership, the United States government would like to encourage the continued dialogue with the county health management team on how to sustain the use of these investments for the well-being of Uasin Gishu Residents,” said Dr. Padma Shetty, deputy director of the office of public health, who represented the United States Agency for International Development at the launch.
The event was covered by KTN television.
