Abt Associates: Bold thinkers driving real-world impact
In Ghana, a malaria prevention project is protecting nearly a million people, a national health insurance plan is making quality care more accessible, and a regional trade project is expanding export markets and improving food security.
During the Abt Associates-led Africa Indoor Residual Spraying (AIRS) project’s campaign to kill malaria-carrying mosquitoes in Ghana, an environmental challenge arose. New, more effective insecticides were available, but they came in plastic bottles. Burying or incinerating the bottles after use posed an environmental hazard.
AIRS Ghana came up with a solution that is common in many places but rare in Africa: recycling. The Abt team worked with Cyclus Elmina Recycling Center on proper treatment of the bottles, which are now turned into paving bricks.
The recycling solution is just one example of how Abt uses innovation in its projects in Ghana, which include mapping out a sustainable universal health insurance system, ensuring safe treatment of childhood diarrhea, and designing a regional trade network that will strengthen food security.
