Abt Associates: Bold thinkers driving real-world impact
Sales of zinc products, such as Zintab - a zinc sulfate tablet - to curb childhood diarrhea, have more than tripled in remote regions of Ghana as a result of a successful marketing partnership with M&G Pharmaceuticals managed by the Abt Associates-led, USAID-funded Strengthening Health Outcomes through the Private Sector (SHOPS) project. Diarrheal disease accounts for 9 percent of deaths for children under age five in Ghana and can be treated with inexpensive and effective interventions such as oral rehydration therapy and zinc supplementation for diarrhea.
SHOPS and M&G have previously collaborated on a successful campaign to grow the market for Zintab. In 2012 the partnership--enhanced by a mass media campaign created jointly with Johns Hopkins University Center for Communication Programs--led to dramatic sales results. Actual sales surpassed expected sales in the first three quarters of the year. Since then, sales have continued to be strong, increasing profitability, growth, and sustainability of the market for Zintab.
According to Mr. George Abu Boateng, the business development consultant of M&G Pharmaceuticals, “Now suppliers of pharmaceuticals have accepted the Zintabs in their various outlets making it very easy for [licensed chemical sellers] to access the products anytime they run out of stock…my salesmen visit these shops on regular basis to re-stock shops that run out of stock.”
