Abt Associates: Bold thinkers driving real-world impact
World Malaria Day, observed annually on April 25, is an opportunity is an opportunity to galvanize ongoing support for efforts to defeat malaria, which kills more than 600,000 people each year – mostly children under five years old. This year’s World Malaria Day theme is: invest in the future – defeat malaria.
Global efforts to control and eliminate malaria have saved an estimated 3.3 million lives since 2000, reducing malaria mortality rates by 42 percent globally and 49 percent in Africa, according to the World Health Organization.
Abt Associates works in more than 15 African countries to introduce and sustain high-impact interventions to combat malaria to promote health, education, and economic growth. A significant amount of this work is through the Africa Indoor Residual Spraying (AIRS) Program, funded by the USAID-led President’s Malaria Initiative.
AIRS protects millions of people in Africa from malaria by spraying insecticide on the walls, ceilings, and other indoor resting places of mosquitoes that transmit malaria, a process known as indoor residual spraying (IRS). AIRS manages IRS operations and logistics in 13 endemic countries and provides enhanced entomological monitoring in Burundi and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
In addition, Abt leads other projects that carry out IRS or support malaria diagnoses and treatment, such as the Uganda IRS 2 project and the Zambia Integrated Systems Strengthening Program (ZISSP).
