Impacts, Vulnerability, and Adaptation

Climate Information, Impacts Modeling, and Vulnerability and Risk Assessment

The wide-ranging consequences of climate change are affecting people and places around the world and are expected to worsen. Decision makers need reliable information on climate variability and change in order to adequately plan for and manage climate risk.

Abt Associates provides local, national, and regional stakeholders with the information and tools they need to understand climate science, translate climate information into climate impacts, and assess future vulnerability and risk.

Our team of experts works with observed climate data, climate model projections, and peer-reviewed science to understand how climate variables – such as temperature and precipitation – will change under different scenarios. In addition, our experts perform field and laboratory-based research on climate change effects and natural processes that influence climate-related environmental change.

We use this information to create models to help our clients and partners realize the realities of climate variability and change, including potential impacts on crop yields, water availability, and energy demand. Using qualitative and quantitative assessment methods, we are able to identify the most significant climate vulnerabilities and risks facing different sectors, systems, and populations.

We have a team of skilled professionals that work to strengthen the provision and use of climate information around the world. We focus on providing timely, tailored climate services that improve decision-making at all levels and enable stakeholders to effectively assess and manage climate risk in the face of uncertainty.

Our services include:
  • Processing, downscaling, analyzing, and applying historical and projected climate information;
  • Evaluating climate impacts across sectors and systems using impact and integrated assessment models;
  • Assessing vulnerabilities and risks to society and natural systems from climate variability and change under a range of climate change scenarios;
  • Field and laboratory studies of environmental effects;
  • Improving access, use, and quality of climate services to support decision-making related to impacts, vulnerability, and risk;
  • Developing customized decision-support tools, guidance, frameworks, and methodologies;
  • Using GIS mapping and other programs as analytic and display tools; and
  • Developing and monitoring climate change indicators that track and communicate trends.
