Clean Energy

Wind turbines and solar panels in Northern Maine Using clean energy reduces consumption of non-renewable, carbon-intensive energy resources. It is therefore a key strategy for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. In addition, clean energy – which includes energy efficiency, renewable energy, and certain other energy generation technologies – can generate a range of economic, environmental, and social benefits, such as job growth, increased energy security, reduced air pollution, and cost savings.

Abt Associates provides domestic and international clients with diverse types of support on issues relating to clean energy strategies, including:

  • Policy analyses and strategic planning: Our policy analysts and economists support clients in evaluating the costs and benefits of clean energy policies. For example, Abt is conducting analyses for the state of Massachusetts to inform revisions to its Clean Energy and Climate Plan. This includes analyses of the greenhouse gas emissions reduction benefits of switching to low carbon fuels, improved building energy codes and appliance standards, and introduction of other renewable and energy efficiency policies;
  • Technology and sector analyses: Our analysts support clients in evaluating the financial, technical, and environmental characteristics of clean energy technologies. For example, for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, we conducted a comparative evaluation of monitoring technologies that could be used at sites where carbon dioxide is geologically sequestered. For the U.S. Department of Energy, we developed an Input Output Calculator to analyze the economic effects of energy technology investments on the power sector; and
  • Best practices identification and communication: Abt assists clients in identifying, implementing, and communicating about clean energy best practices. For example, we assisted the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in developing guidance for state and local governments on implementing best practices for energy efficiency and renewable energy policies.
