Air pollution affects human health, adding to the toll of premature mortality as well as to respiratory and cardiovascular morbidity. As a result, air pollution has been a big focus of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) since its inception.
Abt has helped EPA develop and evaluate regulations controlling air pollution for more than 20 years. Among other work, we have carried out human health risk assessments for air pollution rules and regulations and developed models and methods to help EPA estimate the benefits of reducing air pollutant concentrations.
Abt is recognized for developing EPA’s premier tool for air pollution benefits analysis: the Environmental Benefits Mapping and Analysis Program (BenMAP). This GIS-based computer tool estimates the health impacts and monetized benefits resulting from reductions in criteria air pollutant concentrations.
