Community Development & Neighborhood Renewal

neighborhood park Abt Associates’ work on community development and neighborhood renewal is based on the premise that healthy and sustainable neighborhoods and communities are the product of a coordinated approach — one that includes access to high-quality and affordable housing, high performing schools, adequate transportation and health services, and a sustainable environment. Building the capacity of institutions to deliver services and effect change is an important element in successful community development.

Our work encompasses formative evaluations of local and foundation-led neighborhood transformation efforts, as well as quantitative studies of the impact of federal investments on neighborhoods and communities. For example, we recently completed an evaluation of the Neighborhood Stabilization Program for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, and we also studied the effect of using Community Development Block Grants as a vehicle for rebuilding following Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

Abt’s technical assistance provides communities cross-cutting guidance and training in implementing federally funded demonstrations and programs, facilitates community-wide planning processes to address complex local problems, and helps build local capacity to develop and implement strategies that promote healthy and sustainable neighborhoods.

Senior Abt researchers and technical assistance providers on community development and neighborhood renewal include Larry Buron and Jeffrey Lubell.
