Although child deaths from preventable diseases, such as diarrhea, measles and pneumonia, have declined in recent years, every year millions of children still die from such easily preventable causes.
 
Abt Associates’ approach to reducing child mortality and morbidity includes the use of inexpensive, effective interventions to improve child health. We leverage private sector partnerships to deliver lifesaving treatments to children around the world.Child health is predominantly offered as part of an integrated package in a clinical setting.
 
Our child health interventions include:
  • Improved services for children at primary health care settings;
  • Immunization to treat routine childhood illnesses and preventable diseases;
  • Oral rehydration therapy and zinc supplements to treat diarrheal diseases;
  • Micronutrient supplements to treat nutritional deficiencies; and
  • Integrated Community Case Management.

From 2011 to 2015, a diarrhea management program in Ghana increased caregiver use of oral rehydration salts with zinc to treat diarrhea in children under five, from 0.8 percent to 29.2 percent, and reduced antibiotic use – a generally inappropriate for treatment of non-bloody diarrhea – from 66.2 percent to 38.2 percent.
