Abt Associates: Bold thinkers driving real-world impact
In collaboration with MDRC, Abt Associates is conducting the first large-scale, multi-site, multi-year evaluation of marriage skills support programs aimed at low-income married couples. This study began in 2003 for HHS’s Administration for Children and Families and includes eight study sites. At each site, the project implemented and evaluated programs providing instruction and support to improve relationship skills among these couples. Some programs also included additional services to help low-income couples address specific barriers to a healthy marriage poor parenting skills and problems with employment, health, or substance abuse. To ensure a comprehensive evaluation, couples were randomly assigned to the program or to a control group that received no services. After random assignment, couples are interviewed at 12, 36, and 60 months. At conclusion, the study will inform program operators and policymakers about the best ways to help low-income couples strengthen and maintain healthy marriages.
