Abt Associates: Bold thinkers driving real-world impact
In a two-year study for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Abt Associates examined multiple intervention programs and services aimed at improving parenting skills. The intention was to learn if these programs –provided across the child’s lifespan—led to outcomes that included positive adolescent behavior and reduced high-risk behaviors in children. In stage one of the project that began in 2009, Abt conducted a literature review and synthesis of research on parenting strategies and how they link to adolescent development and involvement in risk-taking behaviors. In stage two, Abt met with experts to understand the state of research and practice on a range of parenting interventions. Insights gathered are the basis for Abt-developed profiles of approximately 12–15 operational programs considered to be exemplary and/or innovative. Findings from this work are contributing to the development of a research and practice agenda that identifies needs and gaps in the field, defines common elements of successful programs, and lays out options for future research and implementation.
