Launched in 2010, NASA’s redesigned Explorer Schools Program is intended to support schools in three ways: 1) engage students in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) educational experiences; 2) satisfy professional development interests for teachers; and 3) boost family involvement in science education. To evaluate the program’s outcomes for both students and teachers, and to discover how it is being carried out in various schools, Abt Associates is conducting a two-year in-depth study. The study involves interviews with a sample of 40 to 50 teachers – at the start and the end of the program year. The Abt team is also making site visits to eight classrooms which will include dialogues with students. In addition, data will be gathered from teacher logs, interviews with student and teacher awardees, and student test scores, if available. Findings from the study will help to inform NASA’s actions on the future of the program.
