Abt Associates: Bold thinkers driving real-world impact
In an effort to continuously update information on participants and programs in the Special Supplemental Food Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Program, Abt designed a national automated reporting system in 1991 for the USDA’s Food and Nutrition Service. Abt has been implementing the system ever since. The system acquires participant information through the automated transfer of individual participant data from State MIS systems. The data collected and delivered biennially captures among other things, the characteristics of individuals and families participating in the WIC Program and the features of state and local agencies providing WIC services. This information allows FNS to assess program effectiveness, target program resources, respond to public inquiries, and prepare WIC Program reports. The data also contain other critical information, including income and nutritional risks of all WIC participants as well as characteristics of migrant WIC participants.
