Abt Associates: Bold thinkers driving real-world impact
Abt Associates conducted this evaluation of school- and community-based teen pregnancy prevention programs for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). Central to the study was a rigorous determination of the effectiveness of replicating three program models nationwide. The three models—aimed at preventing and reducing teenage pregnancy, births to teens, and sexually transmitted infections—include: 1) a long-standing sex education curriculum offered in schools, 2) a clinic-based intervention for sexually active young women and 3) a culturally relevant curriculum for Latino youth. The study began in 2011 and included working with federal partners, grantees, local evaluators, and other stakeholders to ensure that the data are useful to practitioners, researchers, policymakers, and other interested entities. Results will inform HHS’ policy decisions in addressing youth risk behaviors and promoting healthy behaviors among adolescents.
