Abt Associates: Bold thinkers driving real-world impact
The Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (ESE) is engaged in three initiatives designed to improve the quality of its educational professionals, and ultimately, learning outcomes for its students. One initiative focuses on human resource policies in three districts, a second addresses changes in teacher compensation policy in one district, and the third provides new guidance to all districts about how educator performance is to be assessed. Abt Associates, working under subcontract to SRI and with Nancy Brigham Associates, and Julia Koppich, is helping to examine the latter two initiatives. The mixed-method four-year study includes site visits, case studies, surveys, interviews, and evaluation reviews. Formative findings are shared regularly with ESE and with districts about the progress of the initiatives, and the study is also preparing occasional research briefs and a final evaluation report.
