Abt Associates: Bold thinkers driving real-world impact
Abt Associates is launching one of the largest studies of teacher preparation ever conducted. The study, for the U.S. Department of Education/Institute of Education Sciences, is designed to learn whether teacher candidates’ experiences in their teacher preparation programs are associated with their effectiveness as first-year teachers.
The study focuses on the connection between teacher candidates’ opportunities to develop instructional competencies through coursework/observation, practice teaching, and coaching. Approximately 11,000 beginning teachers from the 50 largest school districts in the country will be recruited to participate in the study, the sample for which will include teachers in grades four through six who are responsible for instruction in English language arts, math, or both. Teachers graduating from all pathways are eligible.
The study will measure teacher preparation program experiences through surveys administered in the spring of 2015, and will measure student achievement through value-added modeling. In a subset of classrooms – those with more than five English Language Learner (ELL) students – the study will also examine the relationship between general teacher preparation experiences and ELL outcomes as well as ELL-specific teacher preparation experiences and ELL outcomes.
