BETHESDA, MD—Stephanie A. Marshall, former communications director for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, has been named principal associate at Abt Associates.  In this role for Abt, Marshall will direct health communications projects for the company’s clients including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality and the National Institutes of Health.

“We are thrilled to have Stephanie join Abt,” said Carol Schechter, vice president of the Health Communications and Social Marketing.  “Stephanie is a creative and strategic communications and public policy expert with extensive experience in managing complex national health care initiatives.  She brings an extraordinary wealth of knowledge and skill in health communications and public relations to Abt.”

Before joining Abt Associates, Marshall created and directed HHS’ $50 million pandemic flu planning and preparedness program and led an inter-agency team to develop and execute communications activities in response to the H1N1 flu pandemic. Her work won her the 2009 Assistant Secretary for Health Outstanding Team Performance Award.  She also held the position of deputy campaign manager for the National Medicare Prescription Drug Education Campaign which earned her the 2005 Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Administrators Award.

While at HHS, Marshall served the Office of the First Lady as communications director of the Let’s Move! Initiative where she directed and launched the public service advertising campaign to raise awareness about the problem of childhood obesity and tools to help families make healthy food choices and increase physical activity.

Prior to her work at HHS, Marshall served as vice president of Porter Novelli from 2000- 2004 and director of governmental affairs of the National Health Council.
