Sustaining gains in family planning and reproductive health (FP/RH) requires robust health systems that deliver equitable and affordable FP/RH services. Abt Associates works with governments, the private sector, and civil society organizations to plan, cost, implement, and monitor FP/RH policies and programs.
We incorporate internationally proven best practices and apply evidence-based, data-driven tools to support the delivery of quality FP/RH services, focusing primarily on poor and underserved populations.
Abt Associates invests in improving the clinical capacity of family planning service providers. We design, conduct, and monitor the outcomes of clinical competency-based training courses in FP/RH. We develop evidence-based clinical standards of practice, service delivery guidelines and protocols, and we build facility-based quality improvement mechanisms such as medical audits, health care accreditation, and supportive supervision.
Abt initiatives help increase contraceptive prevalence, reduce contraceptive discontinuation, and reduce unmet need for family planning by expanding the delivery of modern contraceptive methods, especially long-acting and hormonal methods.
Abt adopts innovative ways to generate demand for family planning and birth spacing and to shift social and cultural norms to support family planning. We design research-based behavior change communication campaigns, and conduct social marketing and outreach programs – at the national and community levels. The programs focus on vulnerable populations, young and adolescent girls, and rural and urban areas with the highest unmet need in family planning. We also participate in national and international dialogues to advocate for FP/RH as a health and development priority.
