Meet the TRI Trainers

Mary Ann KowalskiMary Ann Kowalski is an Environmental Scientist who worked for the United States Environmental Protection Agency for the past 25 years. Since 1993 her efforts focused on regulatory compliance in EPA’s Toxic Release Inventory (TRI) Program and from 2004-2016 she was EPA Region 2’s TRI Program Enforcement Coordinator. She conducted over 500 on-site inspections and off-site record reviews. She developed, negotiated and settled 253 plus enforcement actions subsequent to those investigations. Many of the cases included Supplemental Environmental Projects that resulted in improved pollution prevention/reduction practices. She has also served the EPA as a Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) and Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) inspector, and was a coordinator in EPA’s 33/50 Program. She received a Bronze Medal for these efforts in 2016. Ms. Kowalski has an M.P.H. from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey School of Public Health and Rutgers / The State University of New Jersey Edward J. Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy, a M.S. from the University of Pennsylvania in Health Sciences Education, and a B.S. in Biology from the University of Connecticut. Prior to joining EPA, she worked as a Research Associate at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and the University of Connecticut School of Medicine. During that time, she was a co-author on 12 peer reviewed scientific publications in journals such as the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences U.S.A, The Journal of Clinical Investigation and Endocrinology.


Erik EdgarErik Edgar is a chemical engineer with Abt Associates with four years of experience supporting the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and teaching TRI Training workshops. His expertise with the TRI program includes supporting TRI rulemakings on chemical and sector expansions, leading production of the annual Reporting Forms and Instructions, TRI data quality review, and sector analyses including oil refineries and electric utilities. Prior to working at Abt Associates, his professional experience has included process engineering for renewable fuels production, corporate environmental, health and safety services and applied research. His academic and professional research has included fluid dynamics modeling, bioremediation of trichloroethylene, spray atomization using supercritical fluids, and absorbency characterization of specialty medical materials. Mr. Edgar has an M.S. in chemical engineering from Oregon State University and a B.S. in chemical engineering from the University of Wyoming.
