Health Financing and Self –Reliance: Country Experiences on Engaging All Forces for a Sustainable Approach

Preventable diseases (both infectious and non-communicable), complications of pregnancy and childbirth, global health security crises like extreme weather-related disasters, and emerging global epidemics still claim far too many lives and provide significant challenges to country health systems. Meanwhile, international aid is shrinking while country health budgets remain mostly flat. It is particularly important for low- and middle-income countries to build their self-reliance, raise local resources for health, and use those resources efficiently, especially during health crises.

USAID is engaged in that journey to self-reliance with its partner countries. The goal is to build a country’s ability to plan, finance, and implement its own solutions to achieving universal health coverage for its populations and recovering from or adjusting to shocks. It has been widely recognized that these solutions, as well as the strategies to finance them, should be across sectors.
