An Important Strategy to Support Safer Prescribing in Primary Care

After the Centers for Disease Control and  Prevention (CDC) released its Guideline for Prescribing Opioids,  Abt helped the CDC develop quality improvement measures for opioid prescribing and management. The process involved a literature search, online survey, semistructured interviews, and a group discussion. The goal was to develop metrics that were important, valid, timely, useful, needed, and low burden. One critical challenge: the limitations of data that electronic health records capture.
