Reducing salt intake is also going to favor the safe prevention of iodine deficiency by simultaneously keeping the current iodine content in salt, because the actual iodine contents are high for existing salt intakes. However, it is important not only to add iodine to the discretionary salt (table and cooking salt) but also to processed foods, in the same proportion of their sodium content, because in industrialized societies discretionary salt has been replaced by the salt contained in processed foods.
