One of the highest maternal mortality ratios in sub Saharan Africa, at 464 (DHS 2006) per 100,000 live births and less than 50 percent of women give birth in a health facility. Reducing maternal and neonatal mortality is a priority for the government of Mali. There is a need to strengthen ongoing initiatives for achievement of MDGs.
