Abt’s Award-Winning Support for National Recovery Month Helps People in Recovery

Highlights

  • For many people with a mental or substance abuse disorder, the pathway to recovery includes secrecy, shame and regret.
  • Abt Global managed the planning and implementation of National Recovery Month, a SAMHSA effort to destigmatize mental or substance abuse disorders.
  • Accomplishments included developing and maintaining an online Recovery Month Toolkit and designing and producing 76 television public service announcements and online video content.
The Challenge

Most Americans probably know a person in recovery – someone who has a mental or substance abuse disorder. For many people in recovery, the pathway includes shame or regret. Some prefer to share their recovery experiences only in confidence. Others who achieve long-term recovery openly recognize it and celebrate the progress and survival.

The Approach

From the quiet recognition of a sobriety anniversary to large rallies, celebrations of recovery reinforce and place value on the work and courage it takes to achieve this state of well-being. These efforts promote recovery as an outcome that is possible for everyone who has a mental or substance-use disorder. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s National Recovery Month celebrations thus are critical to the effort to move mental or substance-use disorders out of the shadows and shame.

Abt Global managed the planning and implementation of National Recovery Month. Abt built a dedicated team of partners who understand the complexities of addiction and recovery. The partners also used various communication strategies to reach and engage multiple audiences and continually expand and evolve the campaign to reach the next level.
