Can Apprenticeships Help U.S. Workers Get Jobs?

Highlights

  • The American Apprenticeship Initiative funds training/hiring of 34,000 workers.
  • Abt Associates is leading the evaluation of the initiative.
  • The results help determine how to create more skilled workers.
The Challenge

The U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) launched a major initiative to encourage the growth of apprenticeships in the U.S. Through the American Apprenticeship Initiative (AAI), DOL awarded $175 million to 46 grantees that pledged to train and hire 34,000 workers. DOL selected Abt Associates to lead a $6.6 million evaluation of this important initiative.

The Approach

Abt Associates is the prime contractor on the study. Our team includes the Urban Institute, MEF Associates, W.E. Upjohn Institute, Capital Research Corporation, The George Washington University, and McBassi & Company.

The Results

The evaluation will help determine which programs and will sustain, create, and expand the next generation of skilled workers.
