Design of Prevention and Mitigations Measures to Floods in the Northern Region of Costa Rica

In Costa Rica, Abt Global implemented an Inter-American Development Bank funded program to improve the use of decision support tools for designing and implementing flood control measures due to the increased flooding in the northern areas of the country, possibly resulting from climate change. The program included: hydrological monitoring and modeling, terrain modeling, flood plain analysis, and application of structural and non-structural flood control measures. Abt Global calibrated hydrologic models for the government use in the design and implementation adaptation plans to cope with the frequent flooding in the region. The project provided training on the operation of hydrologic models and the application of geographical information systems to support flood analyses.
