The World Bank asked Abt Global to assist with an intensive study of AIDS in Tanzania that investigated prevalence and prevention activities and included work with the National AIDS Control Program and a special study of Kagera Province. The World Bank had developed a macroeconomic model of the impact of AIDS on Tanzania which incorporated effects on labor supply and productivity, changes in savings and spending on health care, and other economic impacts. As part of this study, an Abt Global economist traveled to Tanzania to assess the economic impact of AIDS by collecting information from several government agencies and conducting a survey of labor force impacts among major employers in the Dar Es Salaam area. The survey results demonstrated the impact of AIDS on the labor force and served as an input to the World Bank model predicting the economic impact of AIDS in Tanzania.
