Environmental Zoning for Hydrocarbon Exploration and Development (Nicaragua)
Abt Associates is currently developing zoning requirements that will be applied to coastal and marine areas of Nicaragua where petroleum and natural gas exploration concessions will be let. Each zone will require specific environmental and social due diligence steps prior to exploration and development and, where appropriate, mitigation, compensation, and other protection measures. The zoning classifications are being developed in a geographic information system for these areas. This work is being supported by funds from the Inter-American Development Bank. This project estimates the net economic value of the potential hydrocarbon resources in Nicaragua. The net economic value represents the potential income and wealth (social benefits) that could be generated from these resources and that could serve the various purposes described above. In addition to the social benefits that might be gained from this new development, there will also be social costs.
