HIV Prevention Workshop in Yunnan Province, China

Yunnan Province, situated in Southeastern China on the border with the "Golden Triangle" portion of Burma — one of the primary opium-producing regions in the world — is the area of China with the most severe problems of injection drug use and HIV/AIDS.  This three-day HIV prevention workshop was designed in collaboration with the Yunnan Center for AIDS Prevention.  Dr. Theodore M. Hammett of Abt Global and Dr. Don Des Jarlais of Beth Israel Medical Center, New York City, one of the world's leading experts on HIV and injection drug use, were the principal presenters of the workshop.  Officials from Yunnan Province, as well as from Thailand and Vietnam, were participants.  The workshop covered the epidemiology of HIV/AIDS worldwide, in China, and in Yunnan; HIV/AIDS and prevention strategies among injection drug users; theories and models of behavioral HIV prevention; evaluation methods; and discussion of HIV prevention intervention projects for implementation and evaluation in Yunnan.  For more information, please contact Theodore Hammett, ted_hammett@abtassoc.com.
