The Challenge

There are tens of thousands of victims of sexual exploitation and sex trafficking nationwide.  About 10 percent of men in the U.S. buy sex from prostituted or trafficked women and girls. More than half of prostituted and trafficked women began selling sex when they were children. How do you start, improve, and sustain an initiative to combat demand and prevent prostitution and sex trafficking worldwide?

The Approach

Abt developed a comprehensive online resource for people interested in combatting the demand for commercial sex. The website includes an interactive map that shows the location of anti-demand initiatives across the U.S. Users can learn where various methods have been used, check one or more of the tactics, and zoom into the area of interest.

The Results

Over 1,200-plus cities and counties in the U.S. have launched initiatives aimed at preventing prostitution and ending sex trafficking.

  • A comprehensive approach including reverse stings reduced prostitution by 75 percent in Jersey City, New Jersey.
  • The San Francisco john school reduced re-arrest rates by more than 40 percent.
