Support and Evaluation Resource Program for Research Centers for Excellence in Clinical Preventive Services

Preventive care isn't appropriately distributed in the U.S. today. Some preventive services, such as vaccinations and cancer screening, can save lives. But many people – especially the poor and ethnic or racial minorities – aren't getting the services they need. At the same time, other people get services that have no benefit or even cause harm. Getting the right preventive care to the right people is difficult in routine primary care because of time constraints, conflicting priorities, communication problems, and lack of systems to facilitate delivery.

The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) funded three Research Centers for Excellence in Clinical Preventive Services to determine how the formal primary health care system can best contribute to achieving our nation's prevention and wellness goals. Each center addresses one of three programmatic areas: patient safety; health equity; and health care system implementation.

As a national resource, the AHRQ Research Centers for Excellence in Clinical Preventive Services are finding solutions to the problems of underuse, overuse, and disparities in use of preventive services to ensure that the right people get the right preventive services at the right time. Abt Global provides technical support in the areas of collaboration, evaluation, and dissemination to AHRQ and to these Research Centers for Excellence in Clinical Preventive Services.

Abt, in partnership with a subcontractor – the MacColl Center for Health Care Innovation at Group Health Research Institute – leads the Support and Evaluation Team, which supports the work of AHRQ and the centers by:
  • Promoting collaboration among the centers and organizing in-person meetings;
  • Supporting the centers with their individual evaluations and conducting an overall evaluation of the initiative;
  • Working with AHRQ to identify, prioritize and address research needs; and
  • Disseminating to key stakeholders findings from the research conducted by the centers.
