Support to the Global Environment Facility on Climate Change Impacts and Adaptation

The Global Environment Facility (GEF) serves as a financing mechanism for several international conventions, including the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). GEF administers several key funds that support projects aimed at mitigating and adapting to climate change.

Abt Global’s staff has been supporting GEF since 1994. In recent years, we have been assisting GEF in evaluating and communicating about projects related to climate change. This support has involved diverse activities, including:
  • Evaluating how climate change is considered in GEF projects: On behalf of the GEF Scientific and Technical Advisory Panel, Abt staff evaluated a selection of GEF-funded projects to determine whether and how climate change impacts and adaptation were and should be considered in funding decisions;
  • Supporting the development of a climate resilience tool for screening GEF projects: Abt staff prepared background material to inform the development of a climate resilience operational tool. The purpose of this tool was to help GEF staff and project proponents analyze and account for climate risks when preparing, reviewing, and proposing projects for GEF financing; and
  • Supporting the development of a book on adaptation accomplishments achieved through GEF funding: Abt is providing technical, editorial, and production support for the development of a book that highlights case studies of GEF adaptation project accomplishments. The book is being prepared for release in 2015.
