- Do teachers' experiences in preparation programs affect their impacts?
- Abt launched a major study of teacher preparation.
- Abt related teacher preparation experiences with teaching effectiveness.
The U.S. Department of Education/Institute of Education Sciences wanted to learn whether teacher candidates’ experiences in their teacher preparation programs were associated with their effectiveness as novice teachers.
Abt launched a large study of teacher preparation. The study focused on the relationship between teachers’ opportunities to develop instructional competencies through coursework, observation, practice teaching, and feedback on practice teaching during their preparation programs and their effectiveness in their first three years of teaching.
Abt recruited over 3,200 novice teachers from 242 districts in 18 states to participate in the study. The sample included teachers in grades four through six who were responsible for instruction in English language arts, math, or both. The study measured teacher preparation experiences through surveys administered in the spring of 2015 and estimated teaching effectiveness using value-added modeling.
