Updating the UNFCCC Vulnerability and Adaptation Handbook and Training Materials

Developing countries that are parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) are required to periodically report on their activities to address climate change vulnerability and promote adaptation. The UNFCCC Consultative Group of Experts provides guidance on good practices for developing these reports, including a handbook and associated training materials.

On behalf of the UNFCCC, Abt Associates is leading a team of international researchers in updating the vulnerability and adaptation handbook and training materials. Abt staff prepared the first edition of the handbook in 2005. Abt staff are revising the guidance on frameworks, climate change scenarios, and integration of results, including adaptation analysis. We also are updating the guidance on monitoring, evaluation, and communications.

Abt also is assisting the UNFCCC in providing training to staff from developing country governments on the handbook. Abt staff provided training on types of vulnerability and adaptation assessments and climate change scenarios in workshops with participants from Africa, Asian, the Caribbean, Eastern Europe, and Latin America.
