Abt Associates Board Member Sheila Burke Honored as Health Care Leader by American Academy of Nursing

Rockville, Md.  – Abt Associates congratulates Board Member Sheila Burke, recipient of this year's Health Care Leader Award by the American Academy of Nursing.

According to the Academy, “This award is given to an individual who is an influential national leader dedicated to improving the health of the nation through contributions to organizational excellence.’”

Burke, MPA, RN, FANN, who began her career as a nurse in Berkley, Calif., is a strategic advisor in the Washington, D.C. office of Baker Donelson P.C. and chair of the firm’s Government Relations & Policy Group.  An expert in health policy, she is a member of the faculty at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University and is a Distinguished Visitor at the O’Neill Institute for National and Global Health Law at Georgetown University.

“Sheila is a recognized leader in health policy, and has been an invaluable resource to me, her colleagues on the Board, and our staff,” said Kathleen Flanagan, president and CEO of Abt Associates.  “As a proud nurse, she knows health care from the hospital floor up, and my colleagues join me in congratulating her on this honor.”

Burke held a number of positions during a 19-year career on Capitol Hill – including deputy staff director of the Senate Finance Committee responsible for legislation relating to Medicare, Medicaid, and other health programs – and chief of staff to Senate Majority Leader Bob Dole. In addition to her government and academic experience, Burke served as the deputy secretary and chief operating officer of the Smithsonian Institution, the world’s largest museum and research complex.

She holds an MPA from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University and a B.S. in Nursing from the University of San Francisco.
