Abt Associates Hails Supreme Court Decision Protecting LGBTQ+ Workers from Employment Discrimination

Statement by Abt Associates President and CEO Kathleen Flanagan

Rockville, Md. – I am elated by today’s Supreme Court ruling prohibiting employers from discriminating against LGBTQIA+ workers.  This landmark affirmation of protection for all employees under the Civil Rights Act, which expands the Act’s definition of sex to include sexual orientation and gender identity, is all the more sweet given that it comes during Pride Month.

Here at Abt Associates, we strive every day to create an inclusive culture in which every employee knows they are valued for the varying perspectives they bring to our work.

We acknowledge that a crucial component of celebrating Pride Month is the recognition that there is still more work to be done, and we are developing our Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Strategy to increase LGBTQIA+ visibility within Abt and ensure the inclusivity of our policies and practices. Further, we are committed to addressing LGBTQIA+ inclusion and representation in our project work through our focus on Gender Equality and Social Inclusion.

I am excited by the leaders at all levels who have stepped up to create Employee Networking Groups that enable staff to celebrate and learn more about differing experiences.  PRISM will be sharing opportunities for learning about LGBTQIA+ inclusion and allyship in June, as well as highlighting Abt’s project work with queer-related impacts.  The other three ENGs are Black@Abt, Emerging Leaders, and Wellbeing@Abt.

Abt’s mission is to improve the quality of life and economic well-being of people around the world, and today’s ruling significantly furthers the well-being of LGBTQIA+ individuals in the United States.
