Abt Joins National Academy of Medicine's Action Collaborative on the Opioid Epidemic

Rockville, Md.  –  Abt Global, which has worked to combat the opioid crisis for more than two decades, has joined the National Academy of Medicine’s (NAM) Action Collaborative on Countering the U.S. Opioid Epidemic as a Network Organization.

Abt outlined its commitment to action in a statement on the Action Collaborative’s web site. The Action Collaborative is a broad public-private partnership made up of more than 100 participants representing federal, state, and local governments; health systems; associations and provider groups; health education and accrediting institutions; pharmacies; payers; industry; nonprofits; and academia. The Action Collaborative is developing, curating and disseminating multi-sector solutions to reduce opioid misuse and improve outcomes for individuals, families, and communities affected by the opioid epidemic.

The Action Collaborative focuses on education and training; prescribing guidelines and evidence standards; prevention, treatment and recovery; and research, data and metrics. The Action Collaborative “will work to develop collective solutions and advance those with the most potential to reverse or stem the crisis. We are thrilled to see such a robust commitment from organizations across the country in joining with us to be part of the solution,” the NAM said in a statement.

The NAM is an independent organization of eminent professionals from diverse fields including health and medicine and the natural, social and behavioral sciences. Like the National Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Engineering, it serves as an adviser to the nation and the international community.

Abt has worked extensively in—and is committed to—all four of the Collaborative’s focus areas. Our experience ranges from advising on prescribing and pain management practices to leading research on drug-trafficking organizations and identifying areas for effective intervention. We often provide expert research, monitoring, evaluation and services to illuminate the scope of the crisis.

“Using data-driven solutions to align partners and initiatives will promote effective prevention and treatment interventions and practices that can end the opioid crisis in America,” says Christopher Spera, Ph.D., Abt division vice president, health and environment. “The Collaborative is a great mechanism for achieving that goal.”
