Abt Wins AHRQ Contract to Enhance Healthcare TeamSTEPPS Training Curriculum
Rockville, Md. – Abt Associates was awarded a 16-month contract to update the U.S. Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality’s (AHRQ) TeamSTEPPS® training curriculum. TeamSTEPPS is an evidence-based set of teamwork tools, aimed at optimizing patient outcomes by improving communication and teamwork skills among health care professionals. Since its introduction over 15 years ago, TeamSTEPPS has been taught to hundreds of thousands of healthcare students and professionals to enhance the quality of their teamwork and communication, making care safer for their patients.
While core concepts will not change, , the curriculum needs to be updated to adapt to an environment in which virtual communication is more prevalent, the healthcare workforce is far more diverse, and the need to reduce disparities and promote equity is better understood. In response to these challenges, AHRQ has selected Abt to provide updates and integrate the agency’s current collection of teamwork tools and resources to better support the needs of 21st century healthcare teams and patients.
“Effective teamwork and communication are essential to ensure each patient receives the safest and best quality care,” said Abt Principal Associate Steve Hines, Ph.D. “We look forward to collaborating with AHRQ on this important initiative.”
Abt is partnering with Ariadne Labs to produce updated training videos and will use a network of highly experienced TeamSTEPPS trainers and users to ensure the updated curriculum meets the needs of the entire TeamSTEPPS community.
