Abt’s Near-Term GHG Emissions Reduction Target Validated by SBTi

Abt Associates’ near-term emissions reduction target was approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). The SBTi is a collaboration between CDP, the UN Global Compact, World Resources Institute, and the World Wide Fund for Nature that defines, assesses, and promotes best practices in science-based emissions target setting. Their validation means achieving Abt’s emissions goals will contribute to meeting the Paris Agreement's central goal—limiting global warming to 1.5°C—which science indicates is needed to prevent the most damaging effects of climate change.

Abt commits to reduce absolute Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 38.6 percent by 2027 from a 2019 base year. Abt also commits to reduce absolute Scope 3 GHG emissions from fuel- and energy-related activities, business travel, and employee commuting by 38.6 percent within the same timeframe.

The target covering Scope 1 and 2 emissions from Abt’s operations is consistent with reductions required to keep warming to 1.5°C. Abt’s target for Scope 3 emissions from the value chain (e.g., partners, supply chain) meet SBTi’s criteria for ambitious value chain goals, meaning it is in line with current best practice. We will continue to follow best practices, reassessing our target every five years—or as targets are met—to expand our ambition and actions.

The latest science has made it clear that more needs to be done—and faster—to avoid the worst impacts of climate change and protect lives and livelihoods. The next few years are critical, and companies like Abt have a vital role to play in helping achieve transformation at the pace and scale that is needed.

In October 2021, Abt joined the global Business Ambition for 1.5°C campaign, making a commitment to align our climate mitigation targets with the goal of keeping global warming to 1.5°C and reaching science-based net-zero emissions by 2050. Attaining target validation from SBTi represents a key step to meeting that commitment. Moreover, Abt has submitted our 2050 net-zero emissions reduction target for validation with SBTi and we look forward to continuing to lead on this important issue.
