Dr. Allyson Bear Joins Abt Associates as Regional Vice President, West Africa, Middle East, and North Africa

Rockville, Md.—Abt Associates announced today that Dr. Allyson Bear has been named regional vice president for West Africa, Middle East, and North Africa. She has 21 years of experience in international health and development, including 11 years of residency in Africa and South and Southeast Asia.

“Allyson brings a wealth of technical expertise in health, nutrition, vaccines, and food security and tremendous leadership skills,” said Eric J. Reading, senior vice president, International Development Division. “She’s joining a very strong team, and her experience interacting with Abt over the years was one of the factors in her decision.”

She comes to Abt from Corus International, where she served as vice president of international programs with responsibility for managing an annual portfolio of health, nutrition, and livelihoods programs in 26 countries and direct oversight of 500 employees on seven global teams. She helped to merge IMA World Health, where she was vice president of health programs, with Lutheran World Relief to make Corus International.

Prior to that, Dr. Bear was at the U.S. Agency for International Development for 10 years in various capacities, including co-leading the development of new strategies for child and maternal health, among other high-level visioning efforts. She also served as health officer in Mali; deputy population, health, and nutrition office director in Bangladesh; and evaluator for the global Feed the Future program. Earlier in her career, she was on the faculty at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

Dr. Bear, who has published numerous articles on various public health topics, holds a DrPH and MPH in International Health from Johns Hopkins University.
