What Strategies Work for Postsecondary Success

Bethesda, MD — With more than 14 million students enrolled in high schools and 20 million students enrolled in postsecondary education, there is a large need for evidence on how best to help students prepare for and succeed in college. Abt Global is helping meet this need.

Abt Global will soon provide clear guidance on effective interventions and strategies that aim to help students prepare for and succeed at the postsecondary level. The need for credible evidence is particularly important in the postsecondary field, which spans multiple systems, from middle school college preparatory programs through college and into job placement.

Under a new, five-year, $8.8 million contract with the U.S. Department of Education, Abt will lead the What Works Clearinghouse Postsecondary Education, Postsecondary Preparation and Evidence Reporting (WWC-PEPPER) project. WWC-PEPPER will apply evidence standards to research on postsecondary interventions, and develop products that clearly communicate research findings to postsecondary stakeholder audiences such as teachers, administrators and policymakers.

“Secondary and postsecondary educators face many demands. They want to know what programs and services are helping students transition to college and graduate from college,” said Michael Frye, associate and WWC-PEPPER project director. “Abt brings a deep bench of experienced researchers to this project to answer the question: what is helping students succeed at the postsecondary level?”

Abt will lead a team with partners from AnLar, Analytica, Axiom Corporation and Concentric Research and Evaluation, as well as several consultants. The team will review postsecondary research against What Works Clearinghouse standards and synthesize the findings into easy-to-understand products.

“Everyone wants to know what works in higher education,” said Mary Joel Holin, Division Vice President, Social and Economic Policy. “Abt’s systematic methods and multidisciplinary approach will help inform stakeholders as they look to adopt, develop, or scale up successful postsecondary interventions.”
