USAID has awarded Abt Global and partner FHI are carrying out a major project in Mozambique — the Clinical HIV/AIDS Services Strengthening Project in Sofala, Manica and Tete provinces. This five-year project, funded by USAID, will improve HIV clinical services within a strengthened, comprehensive primary health care system. It builds on USAID's previous investments and successes in Mozambique and will be more sustainable and country driven.  It has three components:

• Creating stronger and more sustainable Mozambican systems and institutions
• Enhancing program linkages and integration to provide a continuum of accessible services including maternal and child health and reproductive health services, within facilities and between facility and community-based services
• Improving service quality in six important areas: HIV counseling and testing, laboratory services, prevention of mother-to-child transmission, adult care and treatment, pediatric care and treatment, and the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of HIV-TB co-infection

Among the ten countries most affected by HIV, Mozambique is one of the focus countries receiving accelerated and intensive assistance for HIV and other related opportunistic infections as part of the U.S. President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR). This project is one of the first to implement the PEPFAR II paradigm shift from an emergency response to health systems strengthening programs that integrate HIV services into primary care and transition management to local institutions to sustain country–level progress.
